Saturday Distribution: Youth Changing the World

Saturday Distribution: Youth Changing the World

Saturday’s distribution of 54 chilis and 77 water bottles  was coincidentally ALL about the youth, from the 5 year old donor that made this possible by forgoing birthday gifts and asking his friends and family to contribute to Chilis on Wheels, to the high school volunteers that distributed the chili, to the high school and college students that attended a Saturday conference to hear about ways to participate in the community. It is so encouraging to see young people care about others.

Saturday’s distribution was made possible by one boy and his mother from Seattle. Kabir turned 5 yesterday and in his birthday invitation card, his mother Kanika Suri Mehra asked that donations in his name instead of gifts be made to Chilis on Wheels. Thank you, Kabir and Happy Birthday! Know that you helped 54 people in need enjoy a warm vegan lunch! We are so grateful to you and your kind heart!

Happy Birthday, Kabir!

We had new volunteers today from the Student Advocates for Animal Rights at Edward Murrow High School. Thank you Grace, and Hannah. Thank you, Julianna for making this possible! You can read more about this wonderful student group and all the great work they do for animals, in their Facebook page here:

Yay for involved, committed, and participatory youth! You give me hope for the future!

Yesterday I participated in a panel on community involvement and participation, hosted by The Hispanic Coalition of New York to a room filled with high school and college students at the National Latino Collegiate Conference in SUNY Albany, organized by Fuerza Latina. It gives me hope to see young people, in this case young Latinos engaged and enthusiastic about helping our community and changing the world.

To be in this conference and speak to youth excited to participate and to have the Edward Morrow Students volunteer on the same day, AND to have the donations to make this possible due to one generous and kind boy turning 5 years of age gives me an incredible dose of hope. I see the tide changing, young people are realizing that they cannot sit back and watch the world go on by, young people are realizing that helping out their community is a responsibility and they are rising up to the challenge, and parents are passing on this realization to their young kids, creating a brand new generation of committed and caring change-makers.
